2023 April PAD Challenge: Day 14

Write a poem every day of April with the 2023 April Poem-A-Day Challenge. For today's prompt, write an "And Now for Something Completely Different" poem.

After today's poem, we'll be two weeks into this challenge. Great job! Also, I just want to thank everyone who shares your poems every day in the comments. It's really an incredibly vulnerable act, and it's one of the things that make this challenge so rewarding to me. And don't worry if you don't share in the comments (I know there are many of you out there); I think you're amazing too!

For today's prompt, we're going to try something a little different in that I want you to write an "And Now for Something Completely Different" poem. This prompt is inspired by the Monty Python skits that would suddenly shift gears, but your poem doesn't have to be humorous. It should aspire to be somehow different than what you've written so far this month.

If you've been writing in first person, try third person (or vice versa). If you've been rhyming, try free verse. If you've been super serious, try something light. If you've been humorous, try tragic or lovey dovey. If you've been all over the map, well, I feel your pain. Let's try something completely different today!

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

Later this month, be sure to check out the 2nd annual Writer's Digest Poetry Writing Virtual Conference with four great presentations put on by award-winning poets covering a variety of topics, including how to put together poetry collections and bring fresh insight to familiar ideas.

Here’s my attempt at an "And Now for Something Completely Different" Poem:

"into the night"

every barbaric yawp and hysterical howl
echoes through the chambers of my heart
as the spinsters and metrical ministers

measure the days and the ways and wait
for death or life or a cellar door to open
a portal into the unknown universe that

beckons us all with the elusive yearning
that plagues us and drives us and calls us
all eventually to sing solemnly into the night

the songs that only we can sing
